"Giraffe" is an Italian word derived from the Arabic "zirafah," which probably comes from an older African word. BRAIN SQUEEZER: What do you suppose the word "zirafah" means? Answer Where does the scientific name come from? People once thought this amazing animal was half leopard (because of the spots) and half camel (because of the little hump on its back). Camelopardalis, the species name, comes from the words "camel-leopard." |
