    Order:   Even-toed Mammals (Artiodactyla)
    Family:   Giraffidae

    Endangered?   No

Life Span:  25 years in the wild, 28 years in captivity

Relatives:  The okapi is the giraffe's only living relative.

Where does the common name come from?  "Giraffe" is an Italian word derived from the Arabic "zirafah," which probably comes from an older African word.

BRAIN SQUEEZER:  What do you suppose the word "zirafah" means?    Answer

Where does the scientific name come from?  People once thought this amazing animal was half leopard (because of the spots) and half camel (because of the little hump on its back).  Camelopardalis, the species name, comes from the words "camel-leopard."
