Diet
Giraffes are vegetarians and will feed on spiny or thorny plants which they handle easily with a prehensile upper lip and very long, prehensile tongue.  (What does prehensile mean?)  They eat leaves from high in the tops of various deciduous and evergreen trees and also some shrubs.  A favorite, acacia leaves, are full of water, enabling giraffes to go a long time without drinking.

BRAIN SQUEEZER:  Can you think of an animal that has a prehensile nose?    Answer

Click here  to see a great black-and-white picture of a funny-looking giraffe curling his prehensile tongue.

Speaking of Diets...
Click here to see a supersized picture of some birds hitching a ride on a giraffe (please be patient while it opens in a new window).

They're called oxpeckers (also known as tick birds).  There are two species of tick birds:  red-billed oxpeckers and yellow-billed oxpeckers.  They spend most of their lives on their chosen host, eating ticks, fleas, flies, blood from wounds and other such yukky stuff.  It's a great arrangement for both parties!

BRAIN SQUEEZER:  Sometimes the only parts of an oxpecker you can see are his tail feathers.  Can you guess where the rest of him might be hiding?    Answer

BRAIN SQUEEZER:  Besides doing a great job with their clean-up duties, tick birds can be life savers.  Can you guess how?    Answer
