BRAIN SQUEEZER: Who is the third predator? Answer An adult giraffe can kill a lion with one swipe of its massive front hoof. The Nile crocodile, however, is an entirely different matter. A giraffe can be ambushed and killed by the Nile crocodile when it settles in for a not-so-relaxing drink. The fact that these gentle giants have to bend so far down makes it easier for the crocodile to grab them, so they generally go to water holes in groups and take turns keeping watch.
Click here to see a picture of a hungry Nile crocodile. Life isn't so easy for baby giraffes. They are hunted by lions, hyenas, leopards, and African wild dogs. The mother giraffe protects her baby by standing over it (click here to see a picture), but despite her best efforts, only about half reach the end of their first year and many are killed within the first few minutes of life.
