Black-bearded saki - CHIROPOTES SATANAS
Possibly Endangered
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The word "Saki": Unknown.
Description: This species is unmistakable because of the long, very thick beard on its chin, temporal swellings on the skull, and it is known for its long and very densely coated tail. Its head, beard, and tail are all black; the shoulders and back vary from reddish brown to blackish, and the hands and feet are black or reddish. Length of head and body up to 20 in, with the tail about that much again, and it weighs about 9 lb.
Location: Guyana, Venezuela, and Brazil, north of the Amazon.
Habitat: Arboreal. Dense forests.
Behavior: It lives in groups of 8 to 30 or even more, but the group splits up to search for food. We have very little information about it otherwise. It feeds on fruit, and on the seeds of unripe fruit. It emits a whistlelike sound which is differently modulated depending on the various situations in which the monkey happens to find itself.
Reproduction: No information.
Note: The saki has a limited geographic range. It was recently reported as having been observed in Peru, but this is not yet confirmed. It is a very rare species, and is actively hunted by the local Indians for the pelt and for the hair on its tail and beard, which are used for ornamental purposes.
