Common marmoset - CALLITHRIX JACCHUS
Possibly Endangered
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The word "Marmoset": "Marmoset" is an old French word for "grotesque figure."
Location: Eastern Brazil.
Habitat: Arboreal. Tropical forests.
Description: This species is easily identified by the two white tufts of hair at the sides of the head, and a white blaze on the forehead. Its body is covered with soft thin hair, grayish in color with darker stripes. The tail has darker-colored rings. Length of head and body 8 to 10 in, and tail 12 to 14 more inches. It weighs about 14 oz.
Behavior: The common marmoset lives in family groups of 3 to 8, but may be seen in groups of considerably larger. It feeds on fruit, insects, small birds, and birds' eggs, as well as tree gums and saps which it accesses by gouging holes in the bark with its specialized incisors. It devotes much time to mutual grooming. By night it sleeps in hollows in trees or hidden among vegetation.
Reproduction: The female delivers between one and three young (usually twins) after a gestation period of about 150 days. Only one female per group reproduces. The others are somehow inhibited from reproduction. The father is very involved in parental care, carrying the young twins on his back except during nursing.
