Dingo - CANIS DINGO
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The Name "Dingo": "Dingo" is a native Australian word for the animal.
Location: Australia.
Habitat: Terrestrial. Scrub and semidesert environments.
Description: The dingo resembles a large yellow dog. The color is more or less uniform, sometimes with reddish or beige highlights. The coat is relatively short and bristly. The head and body is up to 44 inches long and the tail, which is held fairly high and curved at the tip, is 10 to 16 inches long. The dingo weighs up to 77 pounds.
Behavior: The dingo generally lives alone or in pairs, but sometimes large packs are formed. Packs are useful when hunting large kangaroos, a difficult task requiring considerable effort and strength. Once the rabbit was introduced into Australia, it became the dingo's primary prey, followed by the smaller marsupials. Because of man's persecution of the dingo it is now threatened with extinction in large areas of its range. It is sometimes regarded as a feral population of the domestic dog species.
Reproduction: The dingo reproduces once a year, and not twice like the domestic dog. Gestation lasts for two months and the female gives birth to five to seven pups in early spring. The pups are reared by both their parents, and if within a pack, all adult members participate in their care.
