Simian jackal - CANIS SIMENSIS
Endangered
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The Name "Simian": "Simian" may come from a Greek word for "pug nose." "Jackal" comes from the Persian word "shagal."
Location: Ethiopia.
Habitat: Terrestrial. High mountain grassland.
Description: The jackal is larger than the fox, but looks similar, with a pointed face and large ears. The body is lightly built with long legs. It is reddish with a white throat and two brick-red collars around its neck. The lower part of the legs is white. The tail is bushy and has a black tip. The length of the head and body is about 40 inches, with the tail adding about 12 inches. This jackal weighs about 22 pounds.
Behavior: This is the least known of all the dogs because of the difficulty of studying it in its environment. It lives alone or in pairs, and is active both day and night. It feeds on rodents and other small prey. It is probably territorial.
Reproduction: Nothing is known about its reproductive biology.
Note: This jackal is often blamed for destroying sheep, goats, and poultry, and consequently it is hunted ferociously. In addition, the destruction of its habitat has reduced the numbers of this species to no more than 400 individuals. An international protection project was interrupted recently by the political situation in Ethiopia.
