Paraguayan fox - DUSICYON GYMNOCERCUS
Endangered
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The Name "Fox": "Fox" is the Old English word for the animal.
Location: Southern South America.
Habitat: Terrestrial. Grasslands, plains, steppe, and mountains up to an altitude of more than 13,500 feet.
Description: The back and flanks are gray, with a black stripe running along the center of the body. It sometimes resembles a small coyote. The coat is dense and the undercoat is very thick. The tail is long and bushy. The length of the head and body is about 32 inches with a tail up to 14 inches. It weighs about 17 pounds.
Behavior: This fox lives alone or in pairs, and is essentially nocturnal. It hides in burrows dug by itself or by other animals among bushes and at the bases of trees. It is omnivorous and will sometimes make successful attacks on small domestic animals. It is thought to be capable of killing lambs and sheep, and as a result has been actively hunted. In many regions this has led to its complete extinction. It has been reported that when this fox finds itself facing an enemy with no escape at hand, it may throw itself on the ground and pretend to be dead.
Reproduction: Near the end of spring in the southern hemisphere, which is October or November, the female gives birth to three to five young. Nothing else is known about its reproductive and "child-rearing" patterns.
