The Name "Dog": "Dog" comes from the Old English word for the animal, "daga."
Location: Northern South America.
Habitat: Terrestrial. Grasslands and open forests.
Description: The back and the sides of the body are reddish brown; the hind legs and tail are darker; and the forelegs and head are paler. The ears are small compared the head. In overall appearance it resembles a badger, with its stocky body and short legs. This dog has the shortest tail and fewest teeth (38) in the dog family. The length of the head and body is 23 to 30 inches, with a tail of about six inches. It weighs up to 15 pounds.

It is nocturnal, often spending the day in deserted armadillo dens. It will prey on species larger than itself, although it feeds mainly on rodents.
Reproduction: After a gestation period of 65 days, four to six young are born. The den is usually taken by force from another species.
