Wolverine - GULO GULO
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The Name "Wolverine": "Wolverine" plays off the diminutive of the word "wolf."
Location: Northern Europe, Asia, and North America
Habitat: Terrestrial. Woodland with rocky hillsides
Description: This is the largest of the Mustelidae family. The long, soft, dense coat is dark brown with a broad yellow stripe on each side. On the forehead there is a white mark. The head and body is 30 to 40 inches long with the tail adding about eight inches. They weigh up to 40 pounds.
Behavior: This is a solitary creature, active both day and night. Despite its seemingly awkward physical build, it is quite agile. It runs very fast with a strange bounding or galloping gait. It is also a good swimmer and climber. It hunts small rodents, birds, frogs, and plant matter. It sometimes manages to catch larger prey such as reindeer. Its favorite hunting method is the ambush.
Reproduction: Mating takes place in July or August. After eight or nine months, the female gives birth to up to four young in a nest lined with bits of fur and vegetation and hidden among rocks. The young reach independence at about five months, but take three years to reach sexual maturity.
Note: Wolverine fur has an unusual ability to shed ice crystals, and was especially favored by Eskimos as a trim or lining for the hoods of their parkas.
