Pallas cat, manul - FELlS MANUL
Endangered
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The Name "Cat": "Cat" is the Old English word for the animal. "Manul" is unknown, as is "Pallas."
Location: From the Caspian Sea east to western and central China.
Habitat: Steppe and grassland, up to 13,000 feet.
Description: The coat is pale yellow. It is very long on the underside, probably an adaptation for snowy or icy environments. The ears are small, round, and appear pushed backwards. There are a few black markings on the tail and face. The tip of the tail is invariably black and has four rings on it. Because of its short legs, the overall appearance is that of a thickset, bulky animal, which is unusual for a member of the cat family. The winter coat is less speckled than the summer coat, but there is considerable geographic variation with these cats. These cats grow a little over two feet long, with another 12 inches for the tail. It can weigh up to eight pounds.
Behavior: The Pallas cat feeds on rodents, pikas, rabbits, hares, and birds. It is solitary and keeps out of sight of man. It hunts at night and rests during the day among rocks, in caves, rock fissures, or dens of other animals.
Reproduction: Little is known about its reproductive biology. The gestation period probably lasts for around 60 days, and the female gives birth to five or six kittens once a year.
