Jaguarundi - FELlS YAGOUAROUNDI
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The Name "Jaguarundi": "Jaguarundi" is the South American Tupi word for the animal.
Location: From Texas south throughout most of South America.
Habitat: Terrestrial. Forests and scrub, often near water.
Description: There are three different color phases, and all three can be present in the same litter where one is black, the second reddish brown, and the third gray. The young are born with a spotted coat. The jaguarundi is relatively small, has short legs, a small flattened head, an elongated body, and a long tail. These cats reach over 30 inches long with an additional 24 inch tail, and can weigh up to twenty pounds.
Behavior: This is a solitary cat which moves about with agility on the ground and in trees. It prefers to live in areas with scrub and bushes, and hides in low branches and brambles. If feeds on rodents, birds, frogs, rabbits, and occasionally domestic poultry. It is active both day and night, and tends to keep moving, unlike most other cats, which tend to be more sedentary.
Reproduction: Mating possibly occurs twice a year, in summer and spring, during which time pairs form briefly. After a gestation period of about 70 days two to four kittens are born. They nurse for about two months and are independent about four weeks later. There are two litters per year.
