Clouded leopard - NEOFELIS NEBULOSA
Endangered
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The Name "Leopard": "Leopard" comes from two Greek words "leon pard," meaning "lion (large) cat."
Location: Southern Asia.
Habitat: Terrestrial. Tropical forest.
Description: This leopard’s body is elongated with short legs, which are powerfully built. The soles of its feet are large. Its ground coloring is gray or brownish yellow with black squarish markings, and oval and rosette-shaped spots. Its canine teeth are exceptionally long, almost three times as long as their diameter. These cats reach over four feet long, with a 36 inch tail in addition. They weigh about 50 pounds.
Behavior: Little is known about this nocturnal creature in the wild, except that it tends to be solitary. It spends much of its life in trees, where it moves about with great agility. It lies in the branches of a tree and waits for its prey to pass underneath. Then it pounces. Its prey varies from rabbits to young buffalo. It is not known to have attacked man. In captivity it will play for hours, and soon develops an affectionate relationship with its keeper.
Reproduction: The gestation period is about 90 days and litter size is from one to five cubs. They nurse for six to twelve weeks, and become independent at about nine months.
Note: Although this species is commonly called the clouded "leopard," it is not closely related to the true leopard. This species is very rare.
