Steller sea lion - EUMETOPIAS JUBATUS

Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
Subclass: True Mammals (Eutheria)
Order: Meat-eating Mammals (Carnivora)
Family: Otariidae.

The Name "Sea lion": "Sea lion," as in lion of the sea because of its roar or its whiskers.

Location: Northern Pacific coasts of America and Asia.

Habitat: Coastal waters and rocky coastlines.

Description: The male is the color of cork, with a darker chest and abdomen, while the female is paler. The pups are blackish. The neck is enlarged by the presence of a dense mane. There are 34 teeth. As in all pinnipeds, the teeth situated behind the canines are more or less the same and are called post-canines. These male sealions reach ten feet in length and can weigh considerably over a ton, while the females are about 75% of the length and 25% of the weight of the males.

Behavior: This is the largest of all the eared seals. Like all the members of the eared-seal family, this sealion lives in large groups during the breeding season,

Reproduction: Preparation for breeding begins in May when the males arrive at the island rookeries. The males establish and defend their territories against one another. After a couple of weeks, the pregnant females arrive and form harems in the male territories. Soon the pups are born, and immediately following their birth, mating occurs. The fertilized egg does not become implanted in the uterus until the following October. Pups may remain with their mothers for up to a year.
