Gaur - BOS FRONTALIS
Endangered
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The Name "Gaur": "Gaur" is the Hindi word for the animal.
Location: India and southeast Asia
Habitat: Terrestrial. Tropical forest and woodland interspersed with clearings.
Description: The coat is short, coarse, and fairly dense, and in the male it is a very dark brown, while in the female it is rust-colored. Both sexes have horns, but the male's horns are more impressive. They start at the sides of the head and curve upward, reaching a length of over two feet. The gaur can reach eleven feet in length, over seven feet tall at the shoulders, and can weigh over one ton!
Behavior: The guar is the largest of the Asiatic cattle, and lives in small herds of four to eight individuals. In the heat of the day it rests, chewing its cud in the densest parts of the forests. In the morning and evening it goes to clearings to graze, feeding on tender grasses, bamboo shoots, and the young shoots of other trees and bushes. The older males usually are solitary, but during mating season they join the herd, and there are often fights with other males. When rutting, the male gaur emits a distinctive mating call, which attracts both females and other males. It can be heard for almost a mile.
Reproduction: Gestation lasts for 275 days. The single young (occasionally twins) is suckled by its mother for about nine months and reaches sexual maturity in its third year of life.
