Bay duiker - CEPHALOPHUS DORSALIS
Possibly Endangered
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The Name "Duiker": "Duiker" is an Afrikaans (South African Dutch) word for "diver." "Bay" means "reddish-brown."
Location: West Africa and central equatorial Africa
Habitat: Terrestrial. Dense forest.
Description: This medium-sized duiker has a characteristic wide black band running from the head to the tail, tanning out over the hindquarters. The general color is reddish-brown with the lower part of the legs darkening almost to black. The horns, present in both sexes, are parallel, nearly straight, and generally rather long. This animal reaches a length just short of three feet, about two feet high at the shoulder, and weighs about 45 pounds.
Behavior: This nocturnal creature lives in the heart of tropical forests. It is usually solitary or in pairs, and it spends the day hidden in dense vegetation beneath old tree trunks or in tangled bushes. It moves easily through the dense undergrowth along paths, which resemble tunnels through the undergrowth. The head is generally held low, which an adaptation to life in dense vegetation. Because of the bay duiker's secretive habits, it is difficult to observe, and therefore little is known about its behavior.
Reproduction: The gestation period is about 120 days and the usual number of offspring is one.
