Banded duiker - CEPHALOPHUS ZEBRA
Endangered
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The Name "Duiker": "Duiker" is an Afrikaans (South African Dutch) word for "diver."
Location: Guinea and Liberia.
Habitat: Terrestrial. Dense forest in mountainous regions.
Description: Among the 14 species of duiker this is the most easily identifiable. The coat pattern is unmistakable. It has about 12 vertical black bands alternating with white ones on a pale brown background across the back and rump. The legs are reddish with broad black markings. The horns, present in both sexes, are very small and almost hidden by the crest of hair on the forehead. The tail is whitish and long. They grow a little over two feet long, about 16 inches at the shoulder, and weigh up to 35 pounds.
Behavior: This rare species lives in a fairly inaccessible region. Facts about its behavior are therefore few and far between. It is solitary and nocturnal, and feeds mainly on plant matter such as leaves and fruit. It rarely eats grass. When threatened it emits a sound that is like a whistle or a shrill hiss. It is preyed upon by leopards, pythons, and other predators in the forest.
Reproduction: Gestation is probably about 120 days.
Note: This species is in danger of extinction because of the destruction of its habitat.
