The Name "Duiker": "Duiker" is an Afrikaans (South African Dutch) word for "diver."
Location: Africa, south of the Sahara.
Habitat: Terrestrial. Open terrain, variable, but never in densely forested areas; also found in areas inhabited by humans.
Description: This duiker’s color is generally uniform, ranging from ochre to pale brown mixed with gray, especially on the hindquarters. There is considerable geographical variation in the color and length of the coat. Horns are present in males (sometimes in females) and are sharply pointed and straight. There is often a black strip down the face, but this is sometimes confined to the area just around the nose. The tail is short, black on top and white on the underside. Length of head and body up to 46 inches, shoulder height 26 inches, and it weighs up to 37 pounds.
Behavior: This adaptable species has managed to survive where other species have been eliminated. It is nocturnal, and travels singly or in pairs. During the mating season, it sometimes gathers in small groups. It feeds mainly on plants, but will eat animal matter, such as insects. It often wanders into cultivated land and can cause considerable damage to drops. It drinks normally when water is available, but can go without water for long periods. It has great speed and stamina and can normally outdistance dogs.
Reproduction: Duration of the gestation period is about four months.
