Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)

The Name "Reedbuck": "Reedbuck" comes from an Afrikaans (South African Dutch) word "reitbuck," probably meaning "riding buck."

Description: The color is a uniform reddish or deep yellow above and white underneath. Beneath each ear there is a gray patch of bare skin. The tail is short, bushy, and white underneath. This is conspicuous when it holds its tail erect while running. The horns, present only in the male, are broad at the base, and grow backward and then forward again to form a hook, There are several different geographical races, which differ in the size and shape of the horns. Length of head and body is about four and a half feet, shoulder height about three feet, and weight up to 115 pounds.

Behavior: The reedbuck is often seen in small family groups or alone, but sometimes young males will band together in groups of 3 or 4 individuals. It lives in grassland, never far from water. It is active during the day, but spends the hottest part of the day resting in thick vegetation.

Reproduction: Gestation lasts about 230 days.
