Topi, sassaby, korrigum - DAMALISCUS LUNATUS
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The Name "Topi": "Topi" is a Hindi word for "hat." "Sassaby" comes from the Bantu word "tshesebe." "Korrigum" is unknown.
Location: Central Africa.
Habitat: Terrestrial. Savanna.
Description:The ground color is brick-red with broad black markings on the face, shoulders, and flanks. The coat has an irridescent sheen in sunlight. The slope of the back is typical of these antelopes, with the rump is considerably lower than the withers. The horns, present in both male and female, have conspicuous rings and are broad. Many different races have been defined based on the coat color and size and shape of the horns. These animals grow up to six and a half feet long, over four feet high at the shoulders and weigh up to 300 pounds, the female usually slightly smaller than the male.
Behavior:This species of antelope may gather into huge herds (up to 12,000) at particular times of the year when migrating in search of new grazing areas. Usually, however, the korrigum lives in small groups of 15 to 20 individuals, which graze side by side with other animals. They often eat dry grasses not eaten by other species. They can run very fast when alarmed. During the brief mating season (December through March in the Serengeti) the males become territorial and mate with females which wander into their territory.
Reproduction: After a 7 to 8-month gestation, a single young is born.
