Klipspringer - OREOTRAGUS OREOTRAGUS

Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
Subclass: True Mammals (Eutheria)
Order: Even-toed Mammals (Artiodactyla)
Family: Bovidae.

The Name "Klipspringer": "Klipspringer" is the Afrikaans (South African Dutch) word for "cliff springer."

Location: Eastern and southern Africa.

Habitat: Terrestrial. Isolated rocky areas in the veld (kopjes or koppies) or sweeping terrain like the upland plateau of Ethiopia.

Description: Its color ranges from olive green to yellow, becoming brown on the muzzle. The underside of the body is always white. The ears are large, round, and have a conspicuous black border. The horns average 4 inches long, and curve slightly forward. The body is compact, and its long-legged appearance is enhanced because it walks on the blunt tips of its hooves. Length of head and body is about 44 inches, shoulder height up to two feet, and weight about 35 pounds.

Behavior:This semi-gregarious creature is often seen in small groups. It is diurnal, but spends the hottest part of the day resting among the rocks. It moves about on bare rock, where there is no apparent foothold, without difficulty. The texture of the foot beneath the hoof is rather like hard rubber. It can make impressive leaps and bounds, during which its legs remain stiff. It feeds on grass and can go for a long time without water, making do with the liquids contained in the succulent plants on which it feeds.

Reproduction: Gestation lasts for about seven months, after which a single young is born. Most births take place between September and January.
