Common goral - NEMORHAEDUS GORAL
Possibly Endangered
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The Name "Goral": "Goral" is a Hindi word for the animal.
Location: The Himalayas, China, and Korea.
Habitat: Terrestrial. Mountainous regions at an altitude of 3300-13,500 feet.
Description:The grayish-brown coat develops a thick shaggy wool in winter. Both sexes have short pointed horns about 6 inches long. About four and a half feet long, and two and a half feet high, the goral weighs up to 80 pounds.
Behavior: This extremely nimble creature can move at high speed in rocky terrain. It lives in family groups made up of about half a dozen individuals, grazing on plants, grass, leaves, small branches, and acorns early in the morning and in the evening. During the rest of the day the goral hides among the rocks. If faced with danger it "freezes," and then suddenly runs if the danger gets too close. The males are solitary, except in the mating season (September and October).
Reproduction: Gestation lasts about six months, after which the female delivers a single calf.
