Mainland serow - CAPRICORNIS SUMATRAENSIS
Endangered
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The Name "Serow": "Serow" is fron the Indian Mongolian Lepcha language, "saro," for the animal.
Location: northern India, southern China, southeast Asia
Habitat: Terrestrial. Forest and scrub, including tropical and montane environments.
Description: The guard hairs of the coat are bristly and cover the under-fur to varying degrees. A mane runs from the horns to the withers. The horns, present only in males, are light-colored, short (about 6 inches), and curve slightly backward. The serow has large preorbital glands which produce a strong-smelling substance used for marking its territory. Almost six feet long, the serow grows to over three feet high at the shoulder, and weighs over 300 pounds.
Behavior: The serow lives alone or in small groups. It is attached to its territory, which usually covers just a few miles square, and does not move far when feeding. It grazes on grass and also eats shoots and leaves. It is most active at dawn and dusk, and spends the rest of the day in thick vegetation. It has paths along which it moves, and traditional spots where it marks its territory and deposits its droppings.
Reproduction: The gestation period lasts about eight months, and the single young is born in September or October.
