Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The Name "Takin": "Takin" is the Tibetan word for the animal.
Location: The Himalayas and western China.
Habitat: Terrestrial. Montane, at an altitude of 6500-15,000 feet.
Description: The bulky-looking body is covered by a long, dense coat ranging from yellowish to grayish in different areas. The legs are short and strongIy built. Both sexes have strong horns as much as 12 inches long, which grow outward before curving backward and then upward. These animals reach over seven feet long, over four feet tall at the shoulder, and they weigh almost 800 pounds.
Behavior: The takin lives in groups. In summer these groups become very large, numbering several hundred, but in winter they split up and move to lower altitudes. It spends much time hidden in vegetation, grazing early in the morning and in the evening.
Reproduction: The female gives birth to a single young every other year. The young takin is nursed for about nine months, although it joins the herd soon after it is born.
