The Name "Markhor": "Markhor" is unknown.
Location: Central Asia.
Habitat: Terrestrial. Montane regions at medium and high altitudes.
Description: The coat is short and smooth in summer and longer in winter, and it is heavier in the northern part of its range. The males have a long beard on the chin and long hair on the throat, chest, and shanks, while females have smaller fringes of long hair. The horns, which are present in both sexes, are spiral shaped, and are much smaller in the female. Length of head and body about five and a half feet, and they can weigh up to 250 pounds, with the females smaller than the males.
Behavior:Although one of the largest of the wild goats, this usually solitary nimble creature climbs and jumps over rocky terrain with ease. In the winter months it descends to lower altitudes to avoid extreme cold. Mating occurs in the winter. In summer the females gather in small groups which include the newborn young.
Reproduction: Gestation lasts for five and a half months, and then the female delivers one or two kids.
Note: The numbers of this diurnal species have been considerably reduced because of hunting, and because of epidemics transmitted to them by domestic animals.
