Black-handed spider monkey - ATELES GEOFFROYI
Possibly Endangered
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
The word "Monkey": "Monkey" is of unknown derivation, but it may come from the old German story of "Reynard the Fox," in which the ape's son was named "Moneke."
Description: This monkey has a prominent face, which is hairless, and has white rings around the eyes. The body is covered with pale-colored, bristly fur. The legs are long and the hands have virtually no thumb. Length of head and body 15 to 25 in, tail even longer at 20 to 36 in; weight about 13 lbs.
Location: Southern Central America.
Habitat: Arboreal. Tropical forests.
Behavior: It lives in groups of 2 to 8 individuals with the group
splitting up during feeding. The group roams around its own territorial area following fixed routes, in search of fruit and nuts. If an alien monkey or other animal enters the territory, the members of the group approach it emitting shrill cries to scare it away. But the aggressivity of these monkeys is something of a facade, because if the intruder holds his ground, the spider monkeys simply move off in the opposite direction.
Reproduction: The gestation period lasts for about 140 days, and the female gives birth to a single young, which remains dependent on its mother for about ten months. The clitoris in the female is very protuberant, and can be mistaken for the male penis.
