The dog may have been the very first animal tamed by man. Although many people are scared of wolves, the tales of them killing people is a myth. Man and dog have gotten along together for thousands of years.

No wonder, then, that early man looked for ways the dog would be helpful to him. Since the dog is an extremely intelligent animal, it was able to do many tasks with little or no training. For example, the dog would attack any animal coming within its territory. This made it safer for a man and woman to get a little sleep at night, because the dog would be like an siren and let them know if danger was near. That is where the word "watchdog" came from.

Farming became a way of life for early man, and these farmers soon taught their pet dogs to watch over their herds of sheep. Of course, the dogs did an excellent job of that. A dog will even attack a bear if it gets too close, even though a bear is much larger than a dog. Usually the bear would back down and leave, but more than a few dogs have given their lives doing their duty to watch the flock.

Farmers soon noticed how the dogs were excellent at herding the sheep. The German shepherd dog gets its name from "sheep herder." This made it much easier for farmers to move flocks of sheep and herds of cattle from one place to another. As soon as one of the flock began to stray, the dog would bark it back into formation again.

But most of all, dogs are just great pets. Loyal and friendly, most farmers had dogs just because they liked them so much.
