Fish are those animals that live in water, breath with gills, and have backbones. Sharks are among the oldest fish around, predating even the dinosaurs. There used to be a meat-eating shark so large that a six-foot man could stand upright inside its mouth.

We don't know exactly what the sharks looked like back then, because their bones were made of cartilage. (Cartilage is the stiff stuff that crinkles inside your ear when you bend it around.) Since cartilage disappears after an animal dies, zoologist make guesses about how these old sharks looked, based mostly on sharks living today.

Why can't you drink ocean water?
It's too salty.

But the sharks' teeth made of enamel did survive, so we can guess at how large they were. These huge teeth are triangular, four to five inches on each side. The great white shark above, the largest meat-eating shark today, would look small in comparison to these ancient sharks.

Eels look like sea snakes, but sea snakes are not even fish - they're reptiles. Sea snakes breathe air with lungs. Eels are fish, and the moray eel is able to severely injure a swimmer with it's long, sharp teeth. The most amazing eel can actually give a swimmer an electric shock. The electric eel's shock is quite strong, and could be fatal if a swimmer lost consciousness under the water.

How large can a tuna fish grow?
200 pounds!

The barracuda is another aggressive fish with large teeth. The biggest problem with the barracuda is that it can be found in large schools, like the piranha of South America. A feeding frenzy of barracuda could be deadly to a swimmer.

There are some dangerous fish in the ocean, but most fish are uninterested in people. Many island cultures rarely eat meat, because their main diet is fish. Tuna fish in cans is quite popular in North America, but most ocean fish are eaten by those living very close to the oceans. Inland people are more likely to eat fresh-water fish. Fresh water has no salt in it, like most rivers and lakes.

Although we have been discussing dangerous fish on this page, the most dangerous animal in the ocean will be found on a different page of the "AmericaZoo Ocean." You'll be very surprised to learn the identity of that animal.

Can you guess which is the most dangerous ocean animal?
